Hina Festival

The Hina Festival prays for the healthy growth and happiness of young girls, and decorative dolls are a feature of this tradition. Different regions, even within individual prefectures, celebrate the festival in different ways. Fukuoka is no exception. Everywhere you go, you are likely to see the special dolls and display stands, as well as “Sagemon,” the brightly colored decorative orbs that dangle like mobiles. From about the beginning of February until the beginning of April, towns throughout the prefecture will be holding Hina Festival events—come out for a taste of old Japan.

Chikuzen-Iizuka Hina Festival (Iizuka City)
Middle of February to the middle of March
All the stores along Iizuka’s shopping arcade will be displaying dolls on their decorative stands—close to 10,000 in all! At the “Hands-on Hina Corner,” anyone from children to seniors may take a picture ‘dressed’ in the Hina clothes.

Chikugo-Yoshii Hina Walk-around (Ukiha City)
February 10th to the beginning of April
Old mud-wall storehouses and traditional homes line the streets of this quaint town where there will be a great array of Hina dolls on display, some very rare and dating back as far as the Edo era. On Sundays, you can take a tour of the town on rickshaws.

Hina Hometown: Yame Festival (Yame City)
Middle of February to late March
Yame is well known not only for its craftsmanship of Buddhist altars and lanterns, but also its varieties of Hina Dolls. Along the shopping arcades and at various public facilities, visitors will be treated to displays of the Bakobina, which has only survived in this region, as well as more contemporary dolls.

Yanagawa Sagemon Festival (Yanagawa City)
March 1st to April 3rd
Yanagawa is the only city that displays Sagemon decorations together with the dolls. There will be a special display of Hina Dolls at the O-Hana Western-style house built in the Meiji era.
