Normally, we would not be caught dead featuring a fashion magazine in this column, free or otherwise, but Free Magazine Klab was so beautifully designed and unlike anything we’ve seen before that we couldn’t help ourselves. It’s almost art in and of itself. Printed on sturdy matte paper with lovely texture, the 64 pages of issue #3 featured typical fashion fare: clothing, footwear, accessories. The photography was noticeably better than other mags of its ilk and the layout was colorful and attractive, not cluttered and obnoxious. Our favorite part was the four pages of penciled illustrations of freaky hair style art– now that’s a way to advertise salons! Text was confined to captions (all Japanese), except for two pages. Klab is designed and published out of Kumamoto by designLAB. It is widely available there and in Fukuoka. Only Free Paper in Shibuya, Tokyo also carries copies.

通常はこのコーナーで、フリー/有料にかかわらずファッション関連雑誌を紹介することは絶対にない。しかし、FREE MAGAZINE KLABだけは別だ。デザインがとても素晴らしく、今まで私たちが目にしてきた我慢のならない雑誌たちとは明らかに異なる。それ自体をアートと呼んでいいだろう。美しいテクスチャの厚手マット紙に印刷されており、全64ページの第3号では服・フットウェア・アクセサリーといったファッションの典型を取り上げている。同種の雑誌よりも著しく優れた写真が目を引き、色鮮やかで魅力あるレイアウトは、読者に雑然さや不快さを決して抱かせない。私たちのお気に入りは、一風変わったヘアースタイルを鉛筆で描き出した、4ページのイラストレーションだ。これはサロンのいい宣伝になるね！テキストはすべて日本語だが、ほとんどが簡潔なキャプションにとどめられている。熊本のdesignLABがデザイン・発行している雑誌、KLAB。熊本と福岡に広く配置されている。東京では、渋谷のOnly Free Paperで入手できる。

Writers from British colonies that achieved independence in the 20th century have more than simply infused the English literary tradition with a better variety of voice; they have given it great life and perspective. Indian writers quickly come to mind, and the most recent doyenne is Kiran Desai, author of The Inheritance of Loss, which won both the Man Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2006.

Her novel follows the fate of a family at the foothills of the Himalayas at a time of social and political upheaval. A retired judge, a son that emigrates to America, an orphaned granddaughter– the characters reflect the tensions of generations gaps, but are not mere symbols of their time. They elicit your sympathies with their humor and follies, their anger and fear. They leave you hoping all will end well, though it rarely does.

Desai’s novel is available in Japanese translation.

20世紀に入り独立したイギリス植民地出身の作家たちは、イギリス文学の伝統に対して多様な声を注ぐのみならず、卓越した人生と視点をもたらすこととなった。インドの作家がすぐに想起されるが、ここ最近の第一人者と言えばキラン・デサイであろう。彼女は「喪失の響き」の著者であり、2006年にはブッカー賞と全米批評家協会賞を受賞した。

彼女の小説は、社会的かつ政治的な激変の折、ヒマラヤ山脈の麓で暮らす家族の運命をたどる。引退した判事やアメリカに移住する息子、孤児の孫娘といった登場人物たちが、世代間のギャップによる緊張感を映し出す。だが彼らは、単なる往時のシンボルではない。彼らが織り成すユーモアと愚行、怒りと恐れ、それらはあなたの共感を呼び起こすだろう。ハッピーエンドを期待するかもしれないが、一筋縄ではいかない。
