New Music: J.A.M.

Just Another Mind’s early track Sangyô Kakumei (industrial revolution) opens with a harmonic line sounding just like Vince Guaraldi riffing off The Police’s “Message in a Bottle” before hurtling into a high-paced, tightly woven story with several pulse-quickening changes before its pounding conclusion. There are surprises from start to finish, which characterizes both of J.A.M.’s two masterfully produced CDs, their earlier release being the well-received Just a Maestro.

Most are probably more familiar with Josei (piano), Akita Goldman (bass) and Midorin (drums) as members of the internationally acclaimed jazz act Soil & “Pimp” Sessions. But this trio most certainly has its own identity and distinct sound. Without the melodies of Motoharu’s sax and Tabu’s trumpet (and the antics of Shacho), Josei’s piano fills in much of the way. The result is sometimes denser tracks, but ample stretches of lyricism and space remain to give a pleasing balance overall. “Jazzy Joint” adds further texture with guest vocals/rap from Jose James, while the rhythmic scratch of a DJ comes through pleasingly on another track. If you can see J.A.M. live–and we have–you will not be disappointed.
