French Craft Beer

French beer may seem a contradiction in terms for many, but France actually has a very large and popular micro-brewing industry relatively unknown outside its borders. The beer produced by some 150 brewers hardly covered consumption until recently. With craft beer gaining steam worldwide, some of those brewers are looking to expand into overseas markets. One of their main targets: Japan.

In December, 2009, the New Otani Hotel in Tokyo hosted Japan’s first French craft beer tasting event. Seven breweries attended, with some serving as few as two varieties, one as many as six. There was a preponderance of high-gravity, white ales, akin to many Belgian brews, but some amber varieties as well. All in all, it was encouraging to discover yet another country devoting itself to the art of craft brewing (while fighting perceptions that it is merely a wine producer). We decided to take the opportunity to ask one of the organizers, Philippe Eeckhoutte, of UBIFRANCE, more about the event.

K: What is UBIFRANCE?

PE:It is the French government agency for international business development. Our role is to assist small and medium businesses in their export approach. We’ve been assisting the French craft beer industry for about two years in its international development.

K: Of all the breweries in France, why did these seven attend?

PE: They are strong brewers and have reached a critical size for exporting. They are also very complementary in terms of their range of products. They’ve organized themselves into a kind of coalition to scout new markets.

K: Why have they chosen to focus on Japan?

PE: We’ve targeted Japan as a key priority export country alongside the U.S., where we organized a similar event in New York in early 2009—we will do another on the West Coast this year. Japan has a tradition of beer consumption, it is open to foreign products, the French food image is fairly strong, there is an enormous gastronomic culture here, and the populace likes novelty products. But at present, there are less than a dozen French brands sold here.

K: What are your plans moving forward?

PE: We want to revamp and rejuvenate the image of French food in Japan with products that are more familiar, less complicated and more affordable. Beer, actually, captures all those things. That’s why we arranged a cheese pairing for instance.

K: Thanks. And cheers! Or, rather, à votre santé.
