When you wear clothes made of Fair Trade cotton, you are saving lives. Really! We often feature consumable products (coffee, chocolate, mangos, etc), but why not what we use everyday (unless you are a nudist)? Mankind has been using cotton to make clothing for thousands of years. As societies began to industrialize, this created problems. The case of slavery in the US is famous. Child labor has also been widespread, and still continues. In India, the plight of cotton farmers is bleak; many have not been able to earn enough to live, and suicides have increased.

Purchasing Fair Trade products ensures that the farmers and producers of such products get paid fair wages and work in safe, respectable conditions. Most Fair Trade products are also organic, so the environment is not destroyed by harmful pesticides. Ask your local clothing retailer about Fair Trade. It’s quite possible they can get such products in and just didn’t know there was any demand for it. If you can’t get Fair Trade, at least try for organic!
