Fair Trade Topics: Alaffia

Alaffia, the only producer of Fair Trade baskets from West Africa, received Fair Trade certification by passing stringent reviews and satisfying high standards. Among the many so-called Fair Trade businesses that merely use the name for decoration, Alaffia is a true Fair Trade company whose legitimacy has been recognized by an independent organization.

The company seeks to provide job opportunities to the disadvantaged women of West Africa. Through their wages, these women and their children are able to receive education and medical care previously unavailable to them. In this way, they become independent members of society.

Fair Trade requires that producers provide safe and clean working facilities for its workers. Alaffia has achieved this, establishing basket labor unions in Togo and Ghana, and returning plant and equipment investment capital to those people.

The notion of Fair Trade includes concern for the environment. Alaffia’s Fair Trade baskets use indigenous grasses with strong recyclable properties for material. Produced from all-natural products that return to the earth, they are quite eco-friendly.

Since Alaffia hires its workers at higher wages than traditional companies, the motivation of union members is enhanced. They are able to make improvements in quality, generally considered problematic for West African goods, and achieve control standards. As a result, they are able to provide customers with safe, high-quality goods.
