Shouldn’t health care be a universal human right? A group of doctors, nurses and students who spent time in developing countries thought so and launched SHARE in 1983. The NPO strives to provide medical care, training and advice in communities throughout the world. The group is especially active in combating AIDS. It has expanded beyond developing countries and even operates in Japan, where it seeks to provide free medical counseling and check-ups to foreign laborers and day laborers. As the dire economic situation continues, Japan’s day laborers are the hardest hit, losing their jobs, their access to medicine and even their homes. There may be a way you can help.

Fair Trade Product Review: Mangoes

Mangoes are sweet, typically yellow and sometimes dried into strips. They are a delicious source of Vitamin C. They also give hope to farmers in third-world countries around the world as a popular fair trade product. Mangoes, in fact, make up roughly 50% of all tropical fruit cultivation globally. India is by far the world’s largest producer, accounting for more than the other top-ten producers combined. Most of the dried mango products found in stores across Japan, however, come from the Philippines. The dried mangoes featured here are from the islands of Cebu and Luzon, and have been made available in Japan through the auspices of fair trade pioneer People Tree. In addition to two Tokyo shops, 350 stores around Japan carry their products and there is an on-line store as well. Many Mini Stop convenience stores even carry the packages of dried mango.
