Aburayama Citizens’ Forest 「油山市民の森」

Drive just 9km from the center of Fukuoka City to the southwest, and you’ll arrive at Aburayama (597m) on whose eastern face lies about 70 hectares of land known as the Aburayama Citizens’ Forest. This ‘mountain’ is home to an abundance of trees, from cedar, hinoki and sakura to maples and camellias. An array of overseas species from Asia and Europe also thrives in the actual citizens’ forest, and the park’s facilities include a camp area, athletic field and a grass skiing slope.

Beyond a certified orienteering course, there are trails and hiking routes running in all directions, perfect for seasoned hikers and picnickers. One course leads to the mountaintop where you can enjoy rapids, waterfalls and expansive views of Fukuoka while immersing yourself in the forest calm.
Visitors can observe birds and insects at the nearby Aburayama Nature Sanctuary. The “Momo Land Ranch,” has the usual farm livestock and even a course for making butter by hand.

Visitors use the forest to get some respite from the city and refresh their minds and bodies. All you need is a day to enjoy its riches and put yourself on more intimate terms with nature.
